What I'm Writing / Re: Southern Cross Crime

I'm by no means all that familiar with Australian and New Zealand crime fiction but I did recently read the Chris Hammer thriller "Scrublands" and found that to be a fantastic book.

I just finished reading the Max Allan Collins mystery Girl Most Likely. It was a good read but I thought it could've used a dash more intensity overall.

Now to dive full force into my latest round of review copies.

Howdy Mystery Lovers!!

I am a life long reader and my favorite books are mysteries and crime novels.  I started early, gobbling up Agatha Christie, The Hardy Boys, and the Three Investigators. I moved on to many others: Stuart Kaminsky, Earl Emerson, Jan Burke, PJ Tracy, Carol J Perry ( I can't recall them all!) I currently love reading Irish and Scottish Noir, with a current obsession for Stuart MacBride.

I tend to like police procedurals, & P.I.s, with a gritty,dark edge.  8) :D

Looking forward to communicating with other fans and authors.

Hi Aggie! I started with The Hardy Boys and The Three Investigators as well. Looking forward to reading more about what you like, particular regarding the P.I.'s with a gritty and dark edge to them.

I'm guessing the don't contact is Karen Kijewski.

I know the three I loved but haven't heard anything about in almost forever:

Karen Kijewski who wrote the Kat Colorado series.

M.D. Lake who wrote the Peggy O'Neil series.

Julie Smith who wrote the Skip Langdon series.

Oh, and can someone find out what's up with I Am Pilgrim author Terry Hayes. It's been 3 or 4 years since that first amazing book and I'm still waiting for a follow up!

No, it's not a Duffy. I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and it sounded like he's put Duffy behind him.

I see. That's a bummer. But thanks for telling me.

It all boils down to money. It is cheaper to publish an ebook than it is to publish a paper book. Although aviation education is a niche market, I am happy to say that my print books far outsell their ebook equivalents.

It may be cheaper to publish as an ebook for the publisher but they are forgetting about those of us who won't do ebooks. At least if they offered a print on demand option, they'd only print books that were bought and paid for and not have to worry  about unsold copies. Otherwise, they are simply cutting off their nose to spite their face by refusing the option of getting my money.

Hello Mystery Scene community.
My name is Kathy and I'm an avid reader of mysteries (and Mystery Scene).   At age 73, I can hardly remember a time when I didn't read mysteries.  I do remember "borrowing" my mother's copies of Agatha Christie and issues of Ellery Queen magazine at an early age and I was immediately hooked. I loved reading the forum introductions with lists of writers I already enjoy but also names of new ones which I am amazed not to have read.

Won't make my list too long but writers I've enjoyed include what I consider to be classics: Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey, and many more; contemporary writers: Sue Grafton, Sarah Paretsky, Iain Pears (wish he would write more Flavia/Jonathan art history mysteries), Martin Walker, Robert Crais, Marcia Muller, Louise Penny - and many more.

As a newly retired school law attorney I can now indulge myself without guilt. What a delight to have this forum for mystery fans - a rich resource for more new discoveries.

Welcome aboard Kathy and congrats on the retirement. I'm a long way from being able to say that but I sure do wish I had the time to indulge in more reading. And I wouldn't feel guilty about it at all.

My name is Bob Gardner, and I fit into the reader/subscriber category. I write textbooks for aspiring pilots, so no fiction involved. My list of favorite authors is long and varied; suffice it to say that when I log onto Stop, You're Killing Me, some names just jump off of the screen and onto my buy list. Marcia Muller/Bill Pronzini are favorites (she wrote me into Both Ends of the Night as an airport manager), as are Steve Hamilton, Dana Stabenow, Patricia Smiley, C. J. Box, Peter Robinson, Ian Rankin, and fellow Seattleite Mary Daheim.

I'm ready and willing to field questions about civil aviation...communications is my specialty: I wrote "Say Again, Please - A Guide to Radio Communications."

Bob, I'm a big fan of C.J. Box too. I also have a great love for Mary Daheim's Alpine series. But I'm really disappointed in how her publisher is only putting her new go-round with the Alpine series out as an e-book series. I don't have an e-reader and refuse to do so. They should have a print on demand option.

I'm just getting started on William Kent Krueger's "This Tender Land." (Out Sept. 2019) I've never actually read Krueger before, though I've only ever heard the very best things about both his standalones and his Cork O'Connor books. I'm just a few pages in, but the writing is quite beautiful. I can see already why people care so much for his work.

If you are already a fan, I'd be curious to hear from you about why you love Krueger's books. Please share!

Teri,

Sadly, while I do own the first two Cork O'Connor books, I have yet to get around to reading them. If I ever do, I'm sure I'll get back to you on what I thought of them.

I just finished The Chain by Adrian McKinty.

I really liked his first few books, featuring Sean Duffy as a police officer in Northern Ireland in the 80's. Excellent in every way.

The Chain is his "American thriller" -- his description. It's got an interesting concept -- Rachel's daughter is kidnapped, and to get her back she has to kidnap someone else's child -- but I found many sections implausible.

So this isn't a Sean Duffy book? I really liked Police at the Station and They Don't Look Friendly Duffy novel (reviewed for MS!).

You can't go wrong with Ellen Hart's Jane Lawless series. So Oline already has that covered. I love that series a lot from the mysteries to the outrageousness of Cordelia and all things in between. And it has one of the restaurants that I wish was something more than a work of fiction. I really want to try the huge roast beef sandwiches at The Lyme House.

Laurie R. King's Kate Martinelli series is another winner for me. I still keep hoping she will bring it back for another book someday.

Stephanie Gayle's Thomas Lynch series is pretty good. I reviewed the 2nd book in the series and I've got the third book waiting to be read.

Beyond that, I don't really have all that much experience related to this particular subgenre.

I just picked up Kate Carlisle's Homicide in Hardcover from the local library as it is the selection of the month for the library's mystery book club. I'm just diving into it so I'm looking forward to seeing how it is since it has been a series I've been wanting to try out.

Mystery Scene Magazine Issues / Re: Summer 2019 - Lori Roy #160

Still haven't gotten my copy of the new issue yet, but when I updated my 'review' on Goodreads for the Charlie-316 book I reviewed for the issue I got a message from one of the co-writers thanking me for reviewing the book and asking for a preview of the review. The other co-writer liked the review (though at that point, there wasn't anything there).

I've now updated that post with the link to the online version of the review which apparently went live today.

EDIT (6/20/19): I'm picking up my copy of the magazine tonight.
