I was shocked to see this. She was two years older than me, so of course I think of her as being very young.

It is sadly true that Sheila Connolly has died. We were waiting for her daughter to give the go ahead to make the sad news more widespread, but someone edited her Wikipedia page, and now we can grieve publicly. Sheila has been ill with cancer for a while and did not want anyone to know. At least our friend died in her beloved cottage in her favorite place on earth. May her soul rest easy knowing she was loved by so many.

Becke, the link in my original post is the same one you posted. And the quote from Maddie Day is poignant. Maddie is Edith Maxwell, an author I'm a big fan of. It was when I went to a signing for her that I got to meet Sheila for the one and only time. It was nice to be able to chat with someone about Ireland who'd actually been there.

I think the comparison was made because readers aren't sure whether the narrator is reliable or not. The plot itself is nothing like Gone Girl, but it is very twisty. Figuring out who you can trust is part of the fun. :-)

OK. That might be okay then because I am not interested in anything remotely like Gone Girl.

I'm sad to report that author Sheila Connolly has passed away. She wrote the County Cork, Victorian Village, Orchard, Relatively Dead and Museum mystery series as well as many other works.

Read FAIR WARNING by Michael Connelly last weekend - it's not out for a few weeks yet but I got an advance copy. Very good, as usual - features the return of journalist Jack McEvoy and former FBI agent Rachel Walling (THE POET, THE SCARECROW) rather than being a Harry Bosch or Mickey Haller book.

I know that it isn't out yet but it is one of my most anticipated releases for this year.

I'll look for this when my library opens again. I'm in the mood for another novel set in this era. Have you read anything by Mark Mills? You might like Where Dead Men Meet.

I have not read any work from Mark Mills so I will add WHERE DEAD MEN MEET to my list and try to check it out whenever the library reopens.

By the way, I'd suggest starting with the first book in the James R. Benn series called BILLY BOYLE first as stuff referenced in Book 2 was in Book 1.

I finished the James R. Benn novel THE FIRST WAVE, the 2nd book in his Billy Boyle World War II mystery series. As with the first one, I really enjoyed the story.

I had this one checked out from the library before it was closed so I had plenty of time to read it since the library has yet to reopen.

I posted this on the April thread but I see we've switched topics to Sports Mysteries to May.

There's a terrific Emma Lathen mystery that centers around the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. It features John Putnam Thatcher, her banker sleuth, who investigates a fraud scheme that swindles Sloan Guaranty Trust out of a half million dollars. There's a murder of a skier, too. Lots of scenes with the athletes who are at odds with the Olympic committee.

There's a lot of athletes at odds with the Olympic committee these days as well, so the book would have some modern day relevance for sure. Do you know the name of the book? I think this one sounds quite interesting.

Has anyone watched PERSON OF INTEREST? I really loved that show, the writing was so sharp and the depiction of the surveillance state was chilling. It started out as a crime show but really evolved into a sci-fi thriller type of show. Jim Caviezel was a great hero. Any other fans out there?

My mother watched the show when it first started. I never really got into that much but there was one episode that I really enjoyed. It was Season 3 Episode 5 "Razgovor" where Shaw ends up watching over and bonding with a little Russian girl who is really good at her own brand of espionage.
