What I'm Reading / Emma Lathen and more
« on: January 30, 2021, 01:55:44 pm »
I like to reread my old mysteries, and I have a bunch by Emma Lathen. I liked By Hook or By Crook - it's the kind of plot that would make a good TV movie. Lots of suspects, nearly all of them are part of a family business selling what used to be called Oriental carpets. I didn't guess the ending, even though I'd read it before. Of course, that was a long time ago.

I did not enjoy Emma Lathen's Death Shall Overcome. When it was first published in the Sixties, it was probably considered to be very progressive. The main plot is about a broker on Wall Street trying to put a black man on the Stock Exchange. When he was called colored or Negro it was very awkward to read. The race riots and protest marches were a little too familiar. I'll see if I can trade this one.

I found a used book that looks fun. It's called When Bunnies Go Bad by Clea Simon. I've read other books by her and liked them. I'll probably read this book next.

What I'm Reading / Emma Lathen, 1991, East is East
« on: August 14, 2020, 01:48:12 am »
I have a couple old Emma Lathen books and I was going to read another one first. This one isn't even 20 years old but it seemed a lot older. It is set in Tokyo and New York City, and part of it is set in London and Birmingham, England. It isn't very politically correct, but in that respect it's not as bad as it might have been. I had a little trouble following it, due to the large cast of characters. It was dated but still interesting.

At the end of the book was a detail I didn't know. It said: "Emma Lathen is the pen name shared by Mary Jane Latsis, an economist, and Martha Heniddart, a lawyer. Their first book togetheer was published in 1961."

I'm not sure what I'll read next. I'm still reading old books I already have. Can't afford new books right now. I guess it will be eeny-meeny-miney-moe, since there are a couple books that sound good right now. I miss going to the library!

I knew I had read some of these books! I probably should have read more books by the featured author, but when I found this book among my oldies and goodies paperbacks, I had to read it. I also found another Emma Lathen book that I want to reread soon, too.

Anyway, I think this might have been the last of the Rabbi books. I think I read all the others when they were pretty new.

What I'm Reading / Where Dead Men Meet by Mark Mills
« on: April 21, 2020, 02:19:20 am »
I finished reading Where Dead Men Meet by Mark Mills a few hours ago and now I'm too wired to sleep. I know I read at least one other book by Mark Mills. It was called The Information Officer and it came out several years ago. In between these two books were several others I completely missed and one, The Savage Garden, that I think has been sitting, unread, on my book shelves for a long time. If I can find it, I'll read that next.

I don't usually give books ratings but this was excellent. I'd give it five stars.
