I think that picture of Agatha and cake with candles is a celebration of The Mousetrap's birthday, not Agatha's. Maybe the 10 year anniversary? Now it's in its 67th year -- or it will be when London's West End opens up again.

Welcome and General Discussion / Re: Mystery Movies for Self-Quarantine
« on: October 22, 2020, 02:37:23 pm »
I'm going to look up PIE IN THE SKY, I had no idea it was a crime show.

Brian and I enjoyed ENOLA HOLMES on Netflix. Millie Bobbie Brown (STRANGER THINGS) is very appealing as Enola, and the rest of cast including Helen Bonham Carter as her mother and Henry Cavill as her older brother Sherlock was great. Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes series (I believe there are six books) is charming as well. It would be a great holiday gift for a graduate from Nancy Drew.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right now my husband and I are bingeing on New Tricks, and periodically watching PIE IN THE SKY for a change of pace. I like it because it's a lighter mystery, like a cozy. I'm not ready for gloom and doom right now.

We'll start soon with ENOLA HOLMES - it sounds good!

What I'm Reading / Re: Doris Miles Disney - Holy Cow!

Just adding a strong seconding to Brian's praise for Doris Miles Disney's WHO RIDES A TIGER. If you can find this book, by all means grab it. I haven't been this thoroughly bamboozled by a writer since I was reading Agatha Christie for the first time.

This year's movie KNIVES OUT is definitely an old-fashioned mystery movie. Directed by Rian Johnson. With Daniel Craig as the drawling Southern detective, and Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and others. If you liked DEATHTRAP or CLUE, you'll love this.

Mystery Scene Magazine Issues / Re: SUMMER 2020 - Issue #164
« on: May 26, 2020, 10:16:59 am »
Hi Becke,
You should be getting the magazine this week, I'd think. The post office told us that the response to COVID-19 has slowed down the mail somewhat but you should get it soon.

By the way, Issue #164 is the SUMMER issue not the Spring Issue. Don't want everyone to get confused! This is the issue with IVY POCHODA on the cover.

What I'm Reading / Re: My latest read is...
« on: May 26, 2020, 10:09:11 am »
I just finished reading the science fiction / mystery LOCK IN by John Scalzi. It was just terrific. Scalzi imagines a pandemic has hit the world that leaves a small percentage of people mentally unharmed but physically paralyzed and "locked in." The world changes to meet the challenge of these sufferers of "Haydens's syndrome," often called simply Haydens. Technology evolves to the point that the Haydens can borrow the bodies of "Integrators" or can congregate create their own society in the "Agora," an online space for Haydens.

When an Integrator kills someone, who exactly was in charge when the murder happened? It's get complicated fast and our detective, rookie FBI agent Chris Shane, himself a Hayden, has to investigate.

Scalzi is a wonder at world-building. The complicated adjustments the world has made for the Haydens are skillfully described in great detail without slowing down the narrative at all. The Haydens have formed a complex new human society and the investigation takes place very believably within these new constraints. There's lots of humor and really good character development. It's easy to see why this got starred Kirkus, Booklist and Publishers Weekly reviews. It should have gotten an Edgar mention, in my opinion.

Anyway, there's a follow-up titled HEAD ON, which I read first and was also very enjoyable. Start with LOCKED IN though for best effect and expierience a talented storyteller at the top of his game.

What I'm Reading / Re: Just added to my waiting-to-be-read pile.

Oblong Books, our local bookshop in Millerton, NY, is open for curbside pick-up and mail order. I ordered my mom some books for Mother's day and sent other books to two of my nieces who are going crazy in quarantine. I can't wait until the store opens again so I can go browsing on the shelves. They have a well-stocked mystery section among a lot of other topics. There's a second store in Rhinebeck, NY, too. Here's the website  www.oblongbooks.com

Top Ten Lists / Re: (MYSTERY SCENE RELIEVE STRESS QUIZ
« on: May 26, 2020, 09:21:13 am »
Thanks for your quiz, Louis! It's great to see some of the fun "Miscellany"-style trivia that you contribute to the magazine here on the Mystery Scene Forum. Who would have thought 30 years ago (when we both were at The Armchair Detective) that we'd still be working together today?
Crazy!

What I'm Writing / Re: Southern Cross Crime

Hi Craig,
Congratulations on the new book! It sounds wonderful, can't wait to read it. Do you know if your publisher is sending out review copies to Jon Breen? He'll want to take a look for sure.

I just love Emma Lathen. She's one of the few authors that I reread, her narrative voice is such a pleasure. I have all of her books.

We have a feature on Lathen coming up in our Fall Issue #165 by Michael Mallory.

By the way, "Admin" above is Brian Skupin who forgot his user name...

I really enjoyed TO DIE FOR (1995) a thriller starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Gus Van Sant. Kidman plays a none too bright but relentlessly ambitious aspiring TV personality with a penchant for taking shortcuts. It's a great cast: Kidman, Matt Dillon, Joaquin Phoenix, Casey Affleck, Ileana Douglas. The ending is perfectly excecuted.

How about everyone else? What should we be renting/streaming while we're all self-isolating?

Welcome and General Discussion / Re: RIP Barbara Neely
« on: March 13, 2020, 10:42:00 am »
I really liked Barbara Neely's Blanche White mysteries. It was so unusual at the time to have the viewpoint of a domestic worker in a crime story. It's such a shame that  Barbara won't be able to receive her Grand Master Award from MWA. But at least she knew about it before she died.

What I'm Reading / Re: My latest read is...

Right now I'm reading ATLAS OF THE ROMAN WORLD by Tim Cornell and John Matthews (Facts on File, 1982) which I picked up in Lyric Bookstore in Saratoga Springs, NY. I've read all of the Lindsey Davis Falco novels as well as her new series about Flavia Albia both of which are set around 70-85 AD in the Roman Empire. ATLAS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is excellent, lots of maps, drawings and photos to illustrate a clearly told history of the empire. One of the things I really admire about Davis's books is the understanding of the ins and outs of running an empire, the day to day functions of various offices and departments. This is more evident in the Falco books, the Flavia Albia books are more concentrated on the domestic sphere which is fascinating as well.

Welcome and General Discussion / Re: Backward books?
« on: February 29, 2020, 02:32:37 pm »
Hey Becky,
I'm addicted to HGTV shows, too. The backwards books on a bookshelf look is all over the place on these shows. I get that the neutral palette "works" with the many designs but honestly, could anything be dumber? I can't find books that are shelved the correct way, let alone backwards...

You know the show I'd love to see? "My Home Library" with libraries incorporated into everyday homes.
