Title: Bookmarks?
Post by: Becke Davis on January 02, 2020, 01:03:18 am
Assuming you haven't just finished whatever you've been reading, what are you using for a bookmark? I'm about 50 pages into Ruth Ware's THE LYING GAME, and my bookmark is purple. It's a real bookmark, not a random piece of paper or Kleenex that was handy. It says "Smith Family Bookstore" (Eugene, Oregon) and it has images of a sailing ship, a dragon, a pony and other images that make me think of children's books. I picked up a stack of those bookmarks the last time I was in the store.

What's holding your place in the book you're reading today?

I'm using the card I was sent from the publisher to accompany the advance copy of the Kyle Mills/Vince Flynn thriller Lethal Agent. It's the card that acknowledges that I was selected as a Mitch Rapp ambassador in order to get the advance copy.

It's almost as fun to get bookmarks from authors and publishers as it is to get advanced copies of their books!  Whenever I manage to go to a mystery conference I end up shipping home boxes of books but loading my carryon with bookmarks and other promos. :-)

I have so many bookmarks and I have almost never used one in a book.

For some reason I can pick up any book I've been reading and pretty quickly flip to the page I was on.

... does anyone else do this?

I am so jealous of your special talent! Unlike you, I'm a klutz and if I drop a book I can almost guarantee the bookmark will fly out and the book will land on some random page.

People are always giving me bookmarks as gifts and I use them. Love them. Always rotating among the various books. I CANNOT bend pages.
For our wedding, our favors were fancy bookmarks with a saying about books and pencils. They went over big. I still hear from friends that they still have the bookmarks and still use them.

What a great idea for wedding favors! I don't even remember what gifts we gave, but I know they weren't anything fancy or expensive - we were young and broke!

I have some nice bookmarks, including several leather ones I got when we lived in England years ago, and one beautiful embroidered one, and a couple I got at Barnes & Noble sometime back that have sayings engraved on silver-colored metal. I tend to save rather than use the beautiful ones, though.

I have tons of bookmarks! Right now I'm using one with a John Singer Sargent painting; I bought the bookmark at the art museum at Williams College in the Berkshires, when we were there for my parents' 50th anniversary (years ago).

Denise - I'm not sure if this board is set up to include images. I remember we had a lot of fun sharing images on the B&N board but maybe they had something to do with all the notorious glitches at that forum.

I think that the B&N boards used different software, but I have been a member of several boards like this one in the past. I know that we couldn't load actual image files, but had to link to an online image (that was when I used to use Photobucket a lot!). I tried the icon above the text box to Insert Image, but it didn't seem to do anything. Then I tried Insert Hyperlink. Finally, I typed the HTML tags in myself. No luck. Oh, well, maybe another member knows how to do it, and will see this.

Edit: Ah! Got it! Was using the wrong kind of brackets!

You are both patient and persistent - admirable traits! And that image is gorgeous! We celebrated my parents' 50th anniversary (also many years ago) not far from your celebration. I remember visiting an art collection either in the Berkshires or Vermont, but I remember sculptures more than paintings. Did you ever visit the Massachusetts Museum of Modern Art in North Adams? VERY cool!

We stayed in Lenox, and visited the Clark Art Institute at Williams College, in Williamstown, and also the Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge. The Clark does have sculptures, too, as well as decorative arts (porcelain, silver, etc.): https://www.clarkart.edu/museum/Collections/Browse-Collections#/?sortBy=2&FacetId=12

I have been to North Adams, when my best high school friend went there for her freshman year of college, but not to any museums there.

The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA is wonderful. I was surprised to see some movie posters along with all the magazine illustration work which was, of course, outstanding. The Four Freedoms and his other civil rights work was moving. It's a well-designed museum, very worth a day trip.

My grandmother, who lived in Adams, was a huge fan of Rockwell and use to talk about that museum a lot.

Molly MacRae shared some images of a cool handmade bookmark that's a cut-out teapot with a teabag attached to it by a string. I tried to attach an image but I can't reduce it enough to get it to fit. Search "teacup bookmarks" and all kinds of cute ones come up!

my preferred reading is digital but when I do open the pages of a print book I love a cute bookmark in fact I just got one from my sister-in-law for Christmas, but I must confess if one isn't around any old piece of paper, losing lottery ticket, grocery receipt etc... will do :)

Remember when I accidentally fried my Nook awhile back? Well, I'm still reading paper editions of books. True, my house is practically wall-to-wall books (if the predicted Big One comes, we'll be crushed by thousands of books, but what a way to go!), but I get great satisfaction out of sitting in front of the fire (gas log) with a book and a cup of tea (or a soda and a slice of pizza, not picky). I sometimes download PDF files authors send me, but since I have a desktop, it's not easy to comfortably settle down for a long read.

I know I know the feel of a real book but I gotta say digital is so convenient, either my kindle, ipad or phone the book goes where I do and I don't have to remember to put it in my purse LOL

My husband might like it if my book collection was digital rather than printed, but I much prefer to hold an actual book in my hands! What can I say, I'm old school!

I love collecting cute bookmarks. Although they go in a book and I never see them again... Years ago the Agatha Christie Society had a series of bookmarks dedicated to Christie, Poirot, Miss Marple and some of the collectible first editions. I really enjoyed working on them.

*gasp!* Agatha Christie bookmarks? I don't think I have any of those. I just Googled "Agatha Christie bookmarks" and there are some very cool ones (I'll have to start a new Pinterest bookmark page). :-)

Along with bookmarks, let's talk about bookends. I've seen some very cool ones. In fact, I have a Pinterest page that's all about bookends: https://www.pinterest.com/beckedavis/bookends/

I also came across this the other day. Have you ever heard of book inserts? Kind of a cool idea! https://www.boredpanda.com/book-nook-shelf-inserts/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newsletter

Ha, ha, my bookshelves are too full of books for there to be room for bookends! I just use a couple of those thin metal ones (from work) on a couple of shelves with very tall books. Those shelves aren't quite full, and have some of my foreign doll collection on the ends.

Those "book nooks" are very cool, Becke!

My daughter collects dolls - is your collection made up of a particular make of dolls or dolls from particular countries?

I know what you mean about bookends. I have one beautiful pottery set that a friend made for me, some inlaid wood bookends my husband's best man at our wedding made for us long ago, and we have two sets of brass bookends we got for wedding presents. Because they are all special in different ways, I use them as display pieces on bookshelves instead of holding books up.

Hey Becke,
You'll be interested in a pair of collectible bookends that Brian and I own. These are glass blocks with the initials ESG etched on them and they came from the estate of Erle Stanley Gardner. We have them holding up a collection of Perry Mason paperbacks from the 1930s, '40s, 50s, etc.

Wow! How did you come across them? Do you follow auctions, go to estate sales or was it just random chance that led you to those bookends? It sounds like you have a lot of treasures!

They're from different countries. Although the collection does include three Ginny dolls (remember those?) dressed in costumes representing Spain, Scotland, and Holland. Maybe I'll take some pics sometime and post them on Facebook!

I remember Ginny dolls! I don't think I ever had one, and they were too expensive for us to get any for Jessica when she was little. She might have bought one for herself since she's grown up - most of hers are Japanese-made Blythe dolls, Momokos, etc.

Okay, now I'm really off-topic.  To get us back to books, here's a couple links to mystery books featuring dolls:

Hey Becke,
I like to collect ephemera and other items linked to mystery writers and their lives. A good way to find these is to search on "detective fiction" and "ephemera" on Abe.com  I think I found the Erle Stanley Gardner bookends while doing some photo research on him. The bookends came with certificates of authenticity and a couple of photos. We're really happy to have them!

Welcome, Hannah!

I have a bookmark ready to go from a great bookstore in Evanston, IL called BOOKENDS AND BEGINNINGS. I'm sad I haven't been to an actual bookstore in about 6 weeks. One of the drawbacks of quarantine!

By the way, sorry I'm late, Hannah. Our house is in quarantine but with two families sharing the house, we do pass colds back and forth. Luckily, no COVID-19, though! My husband is the current sickie - no fever, just very congested and coughing a lot. We're all sleeping like we have jet lag. Up all night and then sleep all morning. Very strange!

I just went to Abe.com and searched "detective fiction, ephemera" and the first thing to come up was a book by Sharon Fiffer. Turns out she wrote a whole series of books with a detective who collects ephemera of all kinds. I'm intrigued, and I'm going to try and find a few of her books. BTW, on ABE her name is spelled "Saron" but judging by the book covers her name is actually Sharon. Have any of you read her books? I'd love to know more about them.

Don't you love it when authors give you bookmarks? I have some from Hank Phillippi Ryan, Wendy Corsi Staub, Lisa Jackson, Bill A. Brier, Duffy Brown, J.B. Lynn, Annette Blair, Soho Crime, Christy Reece and Karen Rose. (If you are looking for SCARY, check out Karen Rose's books. But brace yourself!)

I do love getting the bookmarks from authors when I attended their signings. I like to use different ones for different books rather than just using one until it wears out.

And I do make sure to share with fellow book lovers when I get extras from an author like I did with Edith.

I read Nancy Pickard's Jenny Cain series. When she was writing them, I would've loved to have been able to have her sign my copies.
