Sorry for forgetting to put the title in my post about Emma Lathen. That's pretty important!

I'm a huge fan of the MISS FISHER MYSTERIES starring Essie Davis. I've seen all the previous shows but there's a new movie coming out called MISS  FISHER AND THE CRYPT OF TEARS on Acorn. Has anyone seen this yet? I'm mulling over whether to subscribe to Acorn to watch it. I already have Netflix so I'm not sure it's worth it.

THere's a really good book of quotations by Jane E. Horning called THE MYSTERY LOVER'S BOOK OF QUOTATIONS. It's from Mysterious Press, 1998 in hardcover then there was a trade paperback.

This is a treasure trove of fun quotes for mystery fans. It's arranged alphabetically by author but there's an index in the back so you can look up quotes by topic. This is one of my favorite dipping-into-before-sleeping reads. There should be an updated edition!

I posted this on the April thread but I see we've switched topics to Sports Mysteries to May.

There's a terrific Emma Lathen mystery that centers around the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. It features John Putnam Thatcher, her banker sleuth, who investigates a fraud scheme that swindles Sloan Guaranty Trust out of a half million dollars. There's a murder of a skier, too. Lots of scenes with the athletes who are at odds with the Olympic committee.

Has anyone watched PERSON OF INTEREST? I really loved that show, the writing was so sharp and the depiction of the surveillance state was chilling. It started out as a crime show but really evolved into a sci-fi thriller type of show. Jim Caviezel was a great hero. Any other fans out there?

One of my favorite Amelia Peabody quotes. It especially resonates now with the current quarantine...

“Marriage, in my view, should be a balanced stalemate between equal adversaries.”

—Amelia Peabody Emerson, The Mummy Case, 1985, by Elizabeth Peters

Wow, that looks good! Matthew Rhys is so talented, he'll be an interesting Perry Mason. Although he looks a little more disheveled than I think of Mason as looking.

I'm finding it hard to concentrate on books. But I've been obsessively reading the news, both the Washington Post and The New York Times. I really have to stop it since it's only adding to my stress...

What I'm Reading / Re: Book Signings anyone?
« on: March 31, 2020, 02:34:15 pm »
I see that The Poisoned Pen Bookshop in Scottsdale, Arizona is still open for curbside delivery and mail order. I was checking out their website and saw a whole slew of online interview coming up on their Facebook page. April 1 - Matthew Quirk, April 6 - Don Winslow, April 7 - Julia Spencer-Fleming. Other authors include Dean Koontz, CS Harris, Jack Carr, Cara Black, John Sandford and DJ Palmer. And that's just the first two weeks of April!

Poisoned Pen is one of the best bookstores around and you'll find lots of other interesting things at their website including a Crime Collector's Club, a First Mystery Club, British Crime Club, etc.

I'm trying to send my business to indy bookstores during the pandemic. Hopefully they'll still be there when we can all get out and about again!

What I'm Reading / Re: Quarantine Reading List?
« on: March 31, 2020, 02:22:34 pm »
I have piles of books I haven't read yet but all the stress from the pandemic is putting me in the mood for comfort reading. I've restarted Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco novels set in the first century AD Roman Empire. The first one is SILVER PIGS and it's a rollicking good PI novel as well as a touching, funny love story. There's a trip to Roman Britain and much Roman pageantry and raucous living in the Aventine.

Lindsey Davis has a sophisticated take on the political as well as the administrative details of empire, perhaps a legacy of her work in Britain's civil service. It's a view from the trenches of a couple thousand years ago.

This is a long series so there won't be any lack of reading in the foreseeable future. I hope everyone here is safe and taking solace from a good book.

Welcome and General Discussion / What's your home library like?
« on: March 28, 2020, 10:57:24 am »
I just love my home library. It has comfortable wing chairs, cozy rugs, a northern exposure (not too much sunlight on books), and yards and yards of built-in white shelves just packed with books -- and some magazines :) THere's usually a pot of tea or a glass of wine on a side table.  There's a radio and stereo system but no TV. The only thing it lacks is a fireplace but realistically that's a lot of work to keep clean.

Over the past week, I've been organizing my books more coherently. I may try alphabetizing although that's a huge job.

How about you guys? What's your home library or reading area like and how is it organized? Has anyone used a software program to take inventory? If so, what one and what did you think?

Here's another quote from a very funny movie.

“Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops!”

—Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant), Arsenic and Old Lace, 1941, screenplay by Joseph Kesselring

One of my favorite noir quotes:

"I don't pray. Kneeling bags my nylons."

-- Lorraine (Jan Sterling), Ace in the Hole, 1951, screenplay by Billy Wilder, Lesser Samuels, and Walter Newman
