Revenge of Innocents

by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg
Kensington Books, May 2007, $

This is the fourth thriller to feature protagonist Carolyn Sullivan. These novels follow Rosenberg's standalone bestsellers from the previous decade. In general the Sullivan books are less complex, faster reads. Revenge of Innocents follows that pattern, right down to the author's trademark short sentences and blunt, no-nonsense style but the challenging plot situations sweep the reader along.

Veronica Campbell's daughter, Jude, is what you might call a piece of work. She is a manipulative liar and a drug addict who may have been abused by her father, Drew. Things become really complicated when Veronica, a fellow probation office investigator and Carolyn Sullivan's friend since childhood, is found murdered in a sleazy motel. Due to her knowledge of the victim, Sullivan is assigned to work closely with the police; and because she is designated guardian of the children, she is personally involved as well. The case quickly derails her pending wedding and honeymoon and intrudes on life with her fiance Marcus, a highly interesting character.

This story has more twists and turns than a road full of mountain switchbacks. Because some of them are less than plausible, the faster you read, the better.
